Northwestern University and Argonne National Laboratory are pleased to announce that Adilson E. Motter, assistant professor of physics and astronomy in the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences at Northwestern University, has received the inaugural Northwestern-Argonne Early Career Investigator Award for Energy Research.  The $100,000 award will support Professor Motter's research which focuses on improving the electric power grid.

ISEN Course Offerings for Fall 2010

Undergraduates…
ISEN 110 – Introduction to Energy Systems for the 21st Century  - This survey course provides an overview of energy issues in the context of global sustainability. Energy demands for industrial, transportation, housing, and commercial uses are presented, and strategies for demand reduction are discussed. Energy supply is presented from the points of view both of largely mature technologies (fossil and nuclear fuels, hydro power) and of upcoming renewable sources (solar, wind, geothermal, wave and tidal, and biomass or -fuels). Issues associated with energy storage (batteries) and energy transport (smart net) are discussed.  While this course will address many technical and scientific aspects of energy, no prerequisite technical courses are required from students.   Instructor:  Yip-Wah Chung  MWF, 1:00 – 1:50 p.m., Annenberg G21

Graduate Students…
ISEN 410 – Topics in Contemporary Energy and Climate Change - The increasing worldwide demand for energy presents a number of complex interdisciplinary challenges, from oil depletion to global warming.  This class will challenge students to answer the question, How shall we power the world in the 21st century?  We will examine the history and geography of energy use; links between energy and climate change; and technological, economic and environmental benefits and drawbacks of various energy sources.  This is a non-technical course and students from all disciplines are welcome. Instructor:  Yarrow Axford, TTh, 12:30 - 1:50 p.m., Locy 301
